Morning Poem
Every morning
the world
is created.
Under the orange
sticks of the sun
the heaped
ashes of the night
turn into leaves again
and fasten themselves to the high branches —
and the ponds appear
like black cloth
on which are painted islands
of summer lilies.
If it is your nature
to be happy
you will swim away along the soft trails
for hours, your imagination
alighting everywhere.
And if your spirit
carries within it
the thorn
that is heavier than lead —
if it’s all you can do
to keep on trudging —
there is still
somewhere deep within you
a beast shouting that the earth
is exactly what it wanted —
each pond with its blazing lilies
is a prayer heard and answered
lavishly,
every morning,
whether or not
you have ever dared to be happy,
whether or not
you have ever dared to pray.

Love Mary Oliver and I do mornings too. Most mornings I’m out at sunrise for my morning walk. Exercise and a beautiful sunrise can’t be beat.
Mary Oliver is one of my all time favoite poets. Thank you for sharing this. I named Oliver’s “Dog Songs” as one of the best books of last year.
The photo is excitingly fantastic. I love to capture one of those. 🙂
Lovely poem – some days I love mornings but there are days the morning simply doesn’t love me back! 🙂
Hmmm,,, did you say Good Morning, WORLD! Wake the morning up!
Lol, maybe it was all the bleeps in my greeting!
Good morning, dear Seeker! Cher xo
Good night, Cher and sweet dreams. 😛
I don’t but I’m surely glad you do! 🙂
That’s okay, Hanne. As long as I have my coffee, I’m good. 😛
me too, first thing in the mo…. when I wake up.. 😉
Early morning is my favorite time of day — savoring the quietude, time to reflect and the day to come brimming with possibility!
Well said, Brett. Morning is so magical especially when the birds are still asleep and the moon is still up. Mind you my mind is blank early in the morning, 😛
