The Years Are Short

Hi Linda,

It’s been a long time since your last musing. I haven’t forgotten your writings. I kept part of you in my draft for the longest time. I sometimes visit this post to watch the video but it’s now private. Here’s hoping all is well with you.

“I think I had allowed myself to forget about the joys in everyday life. The flowers in my garden, the conversation with friend, cooking a meal, my peaceful haven of a backyard and my walk to pick up the mail. I forgot to appreciate a call from my daughter or a visit from my parents. I needed a wake up call and am happy to have received it in the form of Gretchin Rubinā€™s video. My daughter has returned to live at home after graduating and I am treasuring every minute we have together, even times that seem mundane. We donā€™t have to be taking shopping trips or going to the movies, we can be setting the table or folding laundry. I will treasure it, because all too soonā€¦. she will find a different job and move far away. The years are short and this is it !!”

via The Years Are Short.

I’m looking back at some of the writings I kept and feeling nostalgic. I certainly hope that it doesn’t have any pernicious effect on others.

For weeks Iā€™ve wanted to write about all thatā€™s happened in my life in 2015, but I couldnā€™t find a good way to get at it. I keep thinking back to a rainy Sunday night, about a year ago, when I met two friends for dinner. One was pregnant and doing interesting research for her PhD in linguistics. She and her husband were thinking about buying a condo or moving to a new, baby-friendly apartment. The other, a psychologist, I hadnā€™t seen since August, when she was in the midst of a messy break up with a not-at-all-nice guy. But by March she was living happily with her new boyfriendā€”a man who seemed unbelievably successful and kind and good for her. A man she met the day after her break up. She told us about helping to raise his two kids, and her summer plans to attend conferences and visitā€¦

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -35

Violent winds swirl the dark, ominous thunderclouds overhead. The pounding waves crash onto the rocky shore and the roar of the Pacific Ocean makes its intention clear: thrash anything in its path.

With electricity in the air, I am oblivious to everything except the power coming my way as rain beats against my face, sucking me into the depths of the storm.

Ever since I was young, the powerful forces of storms, especially on the Oregon Coast, have held a rare type of electricity for me. Ā Electricity that excites my soul and eliminates any trace of fear I may have.

Far too often, however, itā€™s easier to focus on that burr under the saddle, no matter how minute, and bellyache about our problems. That, despite the fact that many of us, in reality, have been dealt a pretty good hand overall.

Waiting for us

This post resonates what is written in my “About” page. One cannot hurry up the waiting process. Trust in the slow process on waiting even though one is not religious. De Chardin has proven his point and Friar pointed it so well.

waiting1There are lots of different ways to wait. Scripture has over 162 verses that describe all sorts and manners of waiting. I suspect you are familiar with a good portion of the different kinds of waiting ā€“ after all, we all wait. In the military, the common experience was to ā€œhurry up and wait.ā€ We all wait. It is a common experience, and yet there are differences in waiting. There is a difference between expectant, on the edge-of-your-seat waiting; the patient ā€œit will happen in its own good time and there is nothing I can do about itā€ waiting; and the waiting of dread, tedium, and despair. Suicide and the Narrative of Choice

COMPASSION… what we need is compassion for people who are suffering from any disease. For people that commits suicide or survive suicide, blame does not help or saying How can you do this! LEARN, we need to learn from another. I am still learning from my own history. This post is the best one I can relate to. As for now, I am filled with gratitude being alive. Faith, family, care givers and bloggers who shared their experience. Let us help one another understand with compassion.

bottomfacedotcom

Whilst reading about the tragic death of the great Robin Williams I repeatedly stumbled upon the narrative of choice. Places like Psychcentral spoke about suicide being an ā€œinsidious choiceā€, but a ā€œchoiceā€ nonetheless, so much so that they repeated the word to drive the message home. Meanwhile, whilst perusing social media I repeatedly came across variations of ā€œpeople who commit suicide are selfishā€, ā€œhow can anyone do that to their family?ā€. These sorts of comments make me twitchy. Weā€™ve all heard them before.

In my own case they were personalised and weaponised, ā€œHow could YOU do that to your children? Do YOU not care about them?ā€ I did, that was the problem. For some time I had felt like a millstone around the necks of my family. I loved them, but hated myself and could only see the ways I made their lives worse. After 2 failed suicide attempts inā€¦

What do you wantOne of the interesting things about ā€œbloggingā€ is what happens off-line. WordPress has a feature for ā€œcommentsā€ and it is aĀ controllable feature. You can allow all comments and then remove inappropriate ones as you see fit. But then that means you have to monitor; sometimes manners and charity are not hallmarks of text and comments left behind. It takes time. Not willing to dedicate time to the supervising task? The blog administrator can not allow any comments at all. Ā That takes no additional time to oversee. There is at least one ā€œmiddle way.ā€ You can allow comments but require that all comments be approved before they are posted on oneā€™s blog. That takes some time, but you have the luxury of getting to such things when you have time.

As I entered my stifling hot car yesterday afternoon, I turned on the air conditioning. She spoke of how we are each unique Beings with our own unique purpose. And then she said ā€œif your only purpose is to be you, you cannot failā€.

Anita Moorjani reminded me of my personal struggle between being versus doing. I spent decades working as a software developer. I was an analytic drudge. It was pure joy of an odd sort. Itā€™s a kind of thinking that is actually a doing. It became my mode of living, instead of just a way to make a living.

Where shall I hide from the tide

Worth reading: ā€œHope is a state of mind, not of the worldā€¦. Either we have hope or we donā€™t; it is a dimension of the soulā€¦an orientation of the spirit;ā€¦it is not the same thing as joy that things are going wellā€¦but rather an ability to work for something because it is good, not just because it stands a chance to succeedā€¦. The history we write – the lives we lead

Mary Magdalene by Friar Musings. My gravatar is a picture of Mary Magdalene and I have shared you before that I happen to like her not because she was a prostitute but because she is so close to Jesus and was the first one to witness that He came back to life. Thank you, Friar.

friarmusings

MM-Donatello Most people still think of Mary Magdalene as the unnamed sinner (possibly a prostitute) in Luke 7:36-50. Ā Of course we think of her as ā€œthe repentant prostituteā€ because she turns her life around because of the encounter with Jesus.Ā  The problem is that for the first 300+ years of the Church, she was only seen as the first witness to the Resurrection. Ā Did you know that Mary Magdalene is mentioned 12 times in the gospels, more than most of the Apostles? Ā She was present at the crucifixion and was the first witness to the Resurrection (John 20 and Mark 16:9). Ā She was the ā€œApostle to the Apostles,ā€ an honorific that St. Augustine bestowed upon her in the fourth century, and possibly he was but repeating a moniker already in use.

WARNING: If you are my mother, you may want to skip this post.

March is next week and Iā€™ve just uncovered a pile of unopened Christmas cards in the kitchen drawer. I had a rough winter and things that I couldnā€™t face were pushed aside. If I open those cards, Iā€™ll have to acknowledge the relationships they hold. Concede that there are people who care, have to care for them in return.

Life isnā€™t as easy to shove away as those colourful envelopes.

There have been too many lies in my life. I lie to cover-up my feelings and I lie to make people go away. Eventually the lies become too many; too many to keep track of and too many to care about. The lies are my shield, but they make me tired.

When I get too tired, I just want it all to end.

I can show you God

Thank you, John, for sharing your words of wisdom.

ā€œThe places of peace

Ancient places and secrets hidden.
We allowed ghostly views of life and death.
I search for beauty hidden from the normal eyes.
Rare places to find peace.
I find cliffs to sit with Eagles.
I talk with the Gods of the wind and water.
I touch the soil and feel the energy and life.

The ancient Gods are fair.
They do not disturb or change our journey.
They just whisper. Life is fair.
Take what you need. Donā€™t abuse the land.
Love and respect your neighbors.

SheĀ  told me God is dead and forgotten.
We are just people struggling with no place to go or reasons to be alive.

I smiled and pointed to the sea.
I told her God is alive.
Look at the dancing sea.
The sun above us. Gifts for us from God.

God isnā€™t our master or guide.
Life is for us to decide.
She looked frustrated and asked.
Donā€™t God support to protect and save us?

More American Cartoons On Canada

Brett lives in America and blogs about Canada. I have used one of the New Yorker cartoons he posted and this one will tickle your funny bones.

O' Canada

I enjoy the diversion of witty cartoons (especially those in The New Yorker magazine), and Iā€™ve posted previously about funny cartoons that comment on American perceptions and stereotypes about Canada (for example, here and here). Ā Below are a few others that may provide for some amusement.

This one deals with the general lack of knowledge about Canada by many Americans:

What part of Canada . . .

Americans know they share many similarities with Canadians and might be happy to think thatā€™s true in all respects but every now and then something will remind otherwise ā€” such as the finishing of a sentence with an ā€œeh?ā€ or a different pronunciation of a common word (like ā€œaboutā€ pronounced as ā€œabootā€) ā€” even if they canā€™t put their finger on it:

An amusing poem between letters, words and numbers. Enjoy.

the Book of Pain

I

Poems have conversations about us
behind our backs, and whatā€™s worse,
with total strangers. Yes, they lie meekly
enough on the page where we place them
but this is all a sham, because among themselves
they bunch into cabals and define us and measure us
and to be honest, find us generally wantingā€”
although wanting of what theyā€™re not sure.

Itā€™s best to let them go. Thatā€™s what I do.

II

Words know that we isolateĀ and abuse them,
split them and twist them and sneakĀ them in wrongly.
They know when and how theyā€™re hard done by
and that they get old, and become jumbled and confused;
they feel when they get left where they ought not to be
and are ā€˜re-purposedā€™ out of retirement,
whenĀ they should have been left alone.
ThenĀ too, they get lonely and search for
solace and meaning between where they are
and where they arenā€™t, butā€¦

Rules for Being Human

Humans, what do you think of these rules. I think it’s the plain truth.

Chasing Rabbit Holes

RULES FOR BEING HUMAN

1. YOU WILL RECEIVE A BODY. You may like it or hate it, but it will be yours for the entire period of this time around.

2. YOU WILL LEARN LESSONS. You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called Life. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or think them irrelevant and stupid.

3. THERE ARE NO MISTAKES, ONLY LESSONS. Growth is a process of trial and error: Experimentation. The ā€œfailedā€ experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiment that ultimately ā€œworks.ā€

4. A LESSON IS REPEATED UNTIL LEARNED. A lesson will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it. When you have learned it, you can then go on to the next lesson.

5. LEARNING LESSONS DOES NOT END. There is no part of lifeā€¦

Seeking Peace, My Reflections

Everyday, I meditate and reflect on the Day of Grace post. I find it rewarding to be still, quiet my mind and eventually find peace in a world filled with unrest. Pax Tecum. Perpetua.

God has called you to live in peace.Ā
1 Corinthians 7:15b

Peace in the world is hard to find. Ā There are wars and conflicts between nations and within nations. Ā There is anger, abuse, fighting, and disturbances in families, among friends, in schools and work places. Ā There are demands and expectations placed on us. Ā The different personalities and agendas of those around us are often difficult to understand. Ā This time of year it is especially difficult to be peaceful.Ā

Sometimes we need to remove ourselves from situations and settings to relax and find calmness to gain perspective of what is happening and why. Ā We need to seek peace and this may require work on our part. Ā A willingness to listen more than talk in conversations, willingness to compromise where we can ethically and morally do so. Ā Peace, in the world and in our homes and neighborhoods, is a fragile thingā€¦

The worst storm on record has devastated the people of the Philippines, and scientists say climate change fueled it. To All Americans. Praying and hoping with Miss Maria.

Hereā€™s a different perspective for you to ponder on so you donā€™t lay awake through the night wondering what the heck is happening to our country.

Turn off the news, turn away from negativity, donā€™t read the news from the media and trust that the person in office is exactly what our country needed. With all the division between the left and the right, we as the American people will somehow, someway will come together to realize that we are one. A Supple Mind

I am a lover of Rumi and Hazrat Inayat Khan. These two are classics on molding my spiritual life that I became more in tuned with the religion that I am born at. Because Catholicism is Universal, allow me quote a Sufi saying: “There are so many ways to kiss the ground”. This post speaks personally about the cognitive way of thinking.

Sufi Ways

by Navid Zaidi

Once there was a disciple of a Greek philosopher who was commanded by his master for three years to give money to everyone who insulted him. After three years, the disciple was asked to go to Athens to learn wisdom. A sage met him at the gate and insulted him. The disciple laughed at it. The sage asked him why he laughed. The disciple replied that for three years he had to pay money for being insulted and now he was getting it for free. The sage said, ā€˜ Enter the city. Itā€™s all yours.ā€™

(From Dalai Lamaā€™s book: The Art of Happiness)

So it wasnā€™t hardship alone that opened the city of wisdom to the disciple. The prime factor that allowed him to deal with a difficult situation was his capacity to shift perspective, to view his situation from a different vantage point.

Reflections on the Lord’s Prayer

I am sending you blessings from Day of Grace.

As I look back on what I have learned the last few days I am again amazed at how much I have to learn. I am also in awe of a God who lets us learn at a pace that is right for each one of us. Ā I have said the Lordā€™s Prayer all my life. Ā It is probably the second prayer I learned, the first being ā€œnow I lay me down to sleepā€ Ā which I still pray sometimes because it comforts me.

Here I will share some of the new things I learned about this prayerā€¦and some of the things that I had forgotten or have been taking for granted.

  • Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name

Jesus tells us to pray to our Father, His and mine and yours. Ā Father is a personal and intimate term. Ā Not just anyone is your father only he who gives youā€¦

Matthew 6:11 niv

Just for today, just for very moment … this prayer became my mantra. It help me focus and keep the mind from being anxious, It prevents the dark night of the soul from taking over. The continuous repetition of these words gave me the freedom and joy that surpasses beyond understanding. Give us this day….

breadWe often ask for things we think we will need in the futureĀ forgetting about today.
However, today is what we have and we may not have tomorrow.
Perhaps the wiser course is to pray first for today than for the future.
The Lord knows what our futures hold and Ā provides for us day by day.

Are you too busy with tomorrow to pray for today?
How will praying for this day help you with the tomorrows of life?

Blessings this day of grace,

James, My Reflections

Many times I have mentioned to you about A Day of Grace how it enriches my life. I invite you to come and join us.

This month all the devotions were from the book of James. Ā This was the first book I studied when I began my journey on this path of faith and my eyes and heart were opened wide and I learned much about the everyday life of being a follower of Christ. Ā  This month my eyes and heart were once again opened wide and I learned new lessons and learned again some things had gotten lost in the clutter of life.

Ā Here are some of my reflections:

  • Consider it pure joy whenever you face trialsā€¦

There will be trials. Ā Trials are a given and they are a testing of our faith and are meant to develop perseverance. Ā Persevering brings us to maturity of faith and makes us complete in Christ.

  • Do not merely listen to the wordā€¦Do itā€¦

Faith is not meant to be passive it is to be active. Ā Asā€¦

MY 500 MILE CAMINO WALK; I MADE ITā€¦.HAPPY FEETā€¦ ECSTATIC HEART!

So I have learned the difference between pleasure and joy. Pleasure is external, joy comes from within. Pain, whether psychical or mental is not bad, it can tell me something is right or wrong. However, suffering is always my choice, just as being at peace is. This journey has taught me this difference and most important, for me to know if my thoughts are coming from my head or my heart.

JIM'S 484 MILE WALK "CAMINO de SANTIAGO"

WOWā€¦ what an extraordinary experience in my life! The Camino de Santiago is known to produce miracles in your life, and that it did. So much to tell you!

After 56 days of walking and putting on over 500 miles on my shoes, I took my final step in Santiago, Spain. Ā I did walk every inch of the way, carrying my overweight back pack every step.

I set out with several goals, to save a childā€™s life in Kenya and to proveĀ that even today peopleĀ have the compassion to help another in need just as the pilgrims did thousands of years ago. I was right, although I walked with almost no money for food; the pilgrimā€™s and the people of Spain were more than generous to feed me, not even knowing what my mission was. Authors: Three Great Pieces of Life Advices Writers Should Ignore

Another 3Ps, just like the Title of my Blog Site. I write for pure joy of entertaining myself and to play. Play is very important no matter how old I am. Good read.

Creative Writing with the Crimson League

1148655_vintage_fountain_pen_3Why write? Well, in some ways, writing a novel is a lot like life. What it takes to succeed in writing fictionā€“perseverance, perspective, pride, overcoming your fear of mockery and of failureā€“can help shape you into a person ready to spring out into the world, be the best you that you can be, and make things better both for you and for other people.

However, there are some lessons that, while theyā€™re important in life, donā€™t work so well when you sit down at the keyboard. Or with your pen and paper.

So remember, while you should adopt these policies in actual interactions with others, you canā€™t always abide by them in writing.

  • PLAY NICE WITH OTHERS. We all learn this as a kid: the importance of sharing, and being friendly, and being kind. Hopefully, we learn to protect those weaker than us. Well, that doesnā€™t fly withā€¦

What-If-It-Sucks Syndrome

Who cares if our blog is not up to your standard. Just write, right! It’s my blog and it happens that I am entertaining myself. So forget about having that jittery nerves of “What If” I don’t have enough likes or comments. Who cares. Miss Four Eyes has something to say about this.

Miss Four Eyes

My name is Four Eyes, and I suffer from the What-If-It-Sucks Syndrome.

What-If-It-SucksĀ Syndrome: A mental state where a person second guesses everything they do. This includes but is not exclusive to writing, talking, blogging,Ā and less commonly gift-giving. Symptoms may occur at any given point, and last for indefinite amounts of time.
